Proverbs 16:28

Posted on 18 May at 15:10

“A froward man soweth strife: and a whisperer separateth chief friends.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Bible, and it contains practical advice on various aspects of life. Proverbs 16:28 addresses the destructive behaviours of a froward person and a whisperer.

Understanding key terms:– Froward: The term “froward” refers to someone who is perverse, crooked, or deceitful in their ways. They have a tendency to go against what is right and stir up trouble.

– Soweth strife: This phrase suggests that the froward person is actively causing conflict or contention. Their actions and words lead to division and discord among people.

– Whisperer: A whisperer is someone who spreads gossip, rumours, or negative information about others in a secretive manner. They undermine trust and create divisions among friends.

Message and lesson:– The verse highlights the destructive power of certain behaviours: sowing strife and whispering.

– Sowing strife: The froward person intentionally stirs up conflict and disagreement among others. Their actions create tension and hostility, causing harm to relationships and communities.

– Whispering: The whisperer operates in a secretive manner, spreading harmful information or rumours about others. They undermine trust and can cause deep divisions even among close friends.

– The verse warns against engaging in such behaviours and highlights the negative consequences that follow.

– The underlying message is that we should strive to promote peace, harmony, and unity in our interactions with others. Engaging in strife and spreading gossip only serves to damage relationships and break apart friendships.

– The verse encourages us to be mindful of our words and actions, focusing on building up others rather than tearing them down.

Application:

  • Avoid strife:Instead of intentionally causing conflict, seek to be a peacemaker. Strive for reconciliation and understanding in relationships, promoting harmony rather than strife.
  • Guard your speech:Be cautious about what you say and how you say it. Avoid spreading rumours, gossip, or negative information about others. Choose words that build up and encourage, fostering trust and unity.
  • Value friendship:Recognise the importance of genuine friendships and work to maintain them. Avoid engaging in behaviours that could lead to separation or division among friends.
  • Cultivate wisdom:The book of Proverbs emphasises the importance of gaining wisdom and discernment. Seek to grow in wisdom by studying God’s Word and applying its principles to your life.

Remember, Proverbs is a rich source of practical wisdom, and studying its teachings can guide us in making wise choices and living in a manner that pleases God and benefits those around us.
