Proverbs 16:25

There is a way that seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

Proverbs 16:25 (KJV)

Proverbs is Old Testament wisdom literature, attributed mainly to King Solomon. It offers practical guidance for living a godly life. This verse warns about the danger of trusting only our own judgment when making decisions.

The verse begins by acknowledging that there is a way that may appear right to a person. The Hebrew word for “seems” suggests something straight or level in one’s own eyes. This shows how subjective human judgment can be. The verse does not say the way is right; it says it seems right. Our perceptions and opinions can be flawed, even when our intentions are good.

The latter part of the verse reveals the outcome of following such a path. It leads to death. This does not mean only physical death, but also spiritual death, moral decay, and the ruin of relationships and well-being. The plural “ways of death” points to a complete and certain destruction, not just a single misfortune.

This proverb echoes the broader teaching that the human heart is deceitful and that true wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord. Proverbs 3:5-6 reinforces this by urging trust in the Lord rather than leaning on our own understanding. Both passages call us to rely on God instead of our own insight.

To avoid the way that leads to death, we must seek God’s wisdom found in the Bible and through prayer. Before making important decisions, we should test our own perceptions against God’s Word. The path that feels right may lead to destruction, so we need divine guidance.

Recognizing the limits of our understanding requires humility and a teachable spirit. We must be willing to submit to God’s wisdom, even when it contradicts our own opinions or social norms. This involves surrendering our will to God and trusting Him to guide us.

No one is wise enough to direct his own steps safely. This verse is a sobering call to humility. It invites us to acknowledge our fallibility and to depend on God, who alone knows the end from the beginning. When we align our lives with His principles, we choose the way that leads to life and righteousness.
