Proverbs 16:2
All the ways of a man are clean in his own eyes; but the Lord weigheth the spirits.
Proverbs 16:2 (KJV)
Context
Proverbs is wisdom literature, traditionally linked to King Solomon. It gives practical guidance for living rightly. This verse sits in a section that contrasts how people see themselves with how God sees them.
Meaning
The first part exposes a common human tendency: people often view their own actions and motives as clean or pure. This reflects our natural habit of self-justification. We tend to see ourselves in a favorable light and consider our ways right in our own eyes.
The second part gives the decisive contrast. The LORD weighs or examines the spirits behind our deeds. The Hebrew word for “weigheth” means to test or measure, as on a scale. God has perfect knowledge of the heart. He looks beyond the outward appearance and discerns the true motives, thoughts, and desires that drive our behavior.
This verse does not say that all human ways are actually clean. It says they appear so to the individual. A person may be “pure in his own eyes, though not cleansed from his filthiness.” Self-deception often comes from ignorance of our own impurity.
Biblical connections
Other Scriptures stress the same truth. Proverbs 21:2 says, “Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the LORD pondereth the hearts.” Jeremiah 17:9 warns, “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” These passages together show the need for a humble heart that surrenders to divine wisdom.
Application
This verse calls us to humility and honest self-reflection. We should examine our motives and invite God’s scrutiny. We must acknowledge our limited perspective and submit to God’s evaluation. He can refine and direct our paths when we trust His judgment over our own.
Practically, we can ask God to reveal hidden motives and to give us integrity between our outward actions and inner intentions. Living with the awareness that God sees and weighs what others cannot should shape our daily choices.
Reflection
God is the ultimate judge. While we may deceive ourselves or others, God cannot be deceived. He judges according to the genuine condition of our hearts. This truth urges us to align our thoughts, intentions, and actions with His standards. It also points to our need for a heart transformed by God, since human nature is prone to self-deception. By relying on His wisdom, we grow in true righteousness and walk in accordance with His will.
