Proverbs 16:1
“The preparations of the heart in man, and the answer of the tongue, is from the Lord.”
Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings, often attributed to King Solomon. It offers practical guidance for living a godly and successful life. Proverbs 16:1 highlights the sovereignty of God over human thoughts and speech.
The Preparations of the Heart:The “preparations of the heart” refer to the intentions, plans, and motivations that arise within a person’s inner being. In Hebrew thought, the heart represents the center of a person’s being, encompassing the intellect, emotions, and will. It emphasises that our internal thoughts and attitudes play a crucial role in our actions.
The Answer of the Tongue:This phrase refers to the words that come forth from our mouths in response to various situations. It underscores the idea that our speech reflects the thoughts and intentions of our hearts. Our words have the power to build up or tear down, to bring healing or hurt.
From the Lord:This verse reminds us that God is intimately involved in the inner workings of our hearts and the words we speak. It emphasises His sovereignty over human thoughts and speech. It suggests that our thoughts and words are not mere products of chance or individual willpower, but rather, God’s providence is at work in shaping them.
- Guarding our Hearts:Since God cares about the preparations of our hearts, it is crucial for us to be mindful of our thought life. We should strive to cultivate pure and righteous intentions, aligning our desires with God’s will. This involves regular self-examination, repentance, and surrendering our hearts to God.
- Honouring God with our Words:Recognising that our speech has consequences, we should be diligent in guarding our tongues. Our words should reflect the character of Christ, promoting love, truth, encouragement, and edification. Through prayer, seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit, and immersing ourselves in God’s Word, we can develop a habit of speaking in ways that honour God.
- Trusting God’s Guidance:Understanding that the preparations of the heart and the answer of the tongue come from the Lord can bring comfort and assurance. We can trust that God is actively involved in shaping our thoughts and words, guiding us according to His purposes. This should encourage us to seek His wisdom and direction in all areas of our lives.
In summary, Proverbs 16:1 teaches us that God is intimately involved in the thoughts and speech of mankind. It reminds us to guard our hearts, honour God with our words, and trust in His guidance. By aligning our thoughts and speech with His will, we can grow in wisdom and live a life that glorifies Him.
