Wisedome is before him that hath vnderstanding: but the eyes of a foole are in the ends of the earth. Proverbs 17:24 (KJV)

Wisdom

is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth. Proverbs 17:24 (KJV)

The proverb contrasts the position of wisdom with the condition of folly. It states that wisdom is before the one who has understanding, while the eyes of a fool are described as being at the ends of the earth. This saying is often attributed to the Bible and is quoted as: “Wisdom is before him that hath understanding, but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.” However, the exact wording does not appear in the King James Version; it is a paraphrase of biblical themes rather than a direct quotation.

Another related observation notes that the vision of fools is in their own eyes only; the fool’s perspective is limited to what he sees for himself. In contrast, the wise man will hear counsel, indicating an openness to guidance beyond his own sight. The juxtaposition highlights that the fool’s eyes are metaphorically far‑reaching yet confined to personal perception, whereas the wise person positions himself before wisdom and remains receptive to external advice.

Both elements of the proverb and the accompanying observation emphasize a clear distinction between the attitudes of the wise and the foolish. The wise are portrayed as standing before wisdom and being willing to listen, while the fool’s vision remains self‑centered and distant, extending to the ends of the earth without the benefit of counsel. The passage therefore presents a vivid picture of two opposite approaches to understanding and guidance, underscoring the contrast between a posture of humility before wisdom and a self‑reliant, isolated outlook.
