Proverbs 17:24
Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.
Proverbs 17:24 (KJV)
Context
This proverb, part of Solomon’s wisdom literature, contrasts the posture of the wise with that of the fool. The first clause declares that wisdom is before the person of understanding—near, accessible, and set as a guide. The second clause pictures the fool’s eyes roaming to the ends of the earth, distracted by distant and irrelevant things.
Meaning
The wise person keeps wisdom in view, steering by the principles of godly living found in Scripture. The fool, however, is unfocused, chasing what is far off while ignoring what is near. The contrast is between focused attention on wisdom and scattered wandering. The fool’s problem is not lack of opportunity but lack of focus.
Biblical connections
Other translations capture this intentional focus: the ESV says the discerning sets his face toward wisdom, and the NIV says a discerning person keeps wisdom in view. These renderings reinforce that wisdom is not hidden but requires deliberate attention.
Application
Believers are called to keep godly wisdom before them daily, fixing their eyes on Scripture rather than being distracted by the world’s endless pursuits. The wise hear counsel and remain open to guidance, while the fool’s self-centered vision leads to isolation.
Reflection
Where are your eyes fixed today? Wisdom is near for those who seek it; the choice is whether to focus on what is before you or to wander after the ends of the earth.
