Proverbs 18:8
The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.
Proverbs 18:8 (KJV)
Context
Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament, attributed mainly to King Solomon. It offers practical guidance for living a wise and righteous life. This verse warns about the destructive power of gossip and slanderous speech, a theme that appears throughout the book.
Meaning
The term “talebearer” refers to someone who spreads gossip, rumors, or slanderous information about others. The verse compares the words of a talebearer to wounds. Just as physical wounds cause pain and harm to the body, the words of a gossip can cause deep emotional and psychological harm to the person being talked about. The phrase “innermost parts of the belly” symbolizes the deepest part of a person, including their emotions, thoughts, and inner being. The verse suggests that gossip can penetrate deep into a person’s heart, causing profound hurt and damage.
Many modern translations render the Hebrew term for “wounds” as “dainty morsels” or “choice food.” This indicates that gossip is often received as something tasty and desirable, yet it is harmful. The words of a talebearer are often spoken secretly and can be smooth or flattering, making them easy to receive, but they are like wounds that cause deep harm. The damage is not superficial; it reaches the core of a person’s being.
Application
The verse teaches that talebearing wounds the credit and reputation of the person being talked about; it wounds the listener by destroying love and affection toward others; and ultimately it wounds the talebearer himself. Therefore, we should practice restraint before sharing information about someone, considering whether it is necessary, true, and beneficial. We should refrain from engaging in gossip or speaking negatively about others. Instead, we should use our words to encourage, uplift, and speak truth in love. If we have participated in gossip or spread harmful rumors, we should take steps to rectify the situation by apologizing to those affected, seeking forgiveness, and striving to make amends. We should also choose our company wisely, surrounding ourselves with people who speak positively and encourage virtuous behavior, avoiding individuals who thrive on gossip and negativity.
Reflection
Gossip is not a trivial matter but a serious sin with penetrating, damaging consequences. Listening to gossip harms the soul as much as speaking it. As followers of Christ, we are called to speak words that promote love, grace, and edification. Proverbs provides practical wisdom for daily living, and it is important to apply its teachings with humility and a desire to honour God in our words and actions.
