Proverbs 22:10
“Cast out the scorner, and contention shall go out; yea, strife and reproach shall cease.”
The Root of Contention
Proverbs 22:10 offers a direct and highly practical principle for resolving conflict. It identifies a specific type of person—the scorner or mocker—as the primary catalyst for relational and communal turmoil. This verse presents a simple but profound cause-and-effect relationship: if you remove the root of the problem, the bitter fruits of contention, strife, and reproach will naturally wither and disappear.
The Nature of a Scorner
The biblical wisdom literature frequently addresses the destructive nature of a scorner. This is an individual characterized by arrogance, a refusal to accept correction, and a tendency to stir up discord. While believers are generally called to patience, longsuffering, and peacemaking, this verse highlights that there are times when maintaining peace requires decisive action to remove a toxic influence. You cannot simply manage, appease, or endlessly negotiate with a scorner; their very disposition breeds conflict. As long as they remain, peace is impossible.
Biblical Wisdom on Conflict and Peace
This principle aligns well with broader biblical teaching on the sources of conflict and the pursuit of peace. James 4 asks what causes fights and quarrels, pointing to internal, selfish desires. The scorner operates out of this worldly, self-centered wisdom, which produces disorder. In contrast, the wisdom that comes from heaven is pure, peace-loving, and full of mercy. By removing the scorner, a family or community makes room for the harvest of righteousness that is sown by true peacemakers.
Furthermore, Psalm 37 advises believers to cease from anger and forsake wrath. A scorner perpetually incites anger, creating a toxic environment where it becomes intensely difficult for the meek to thrive. When a scorner introduces slander and constant mockery into a group, they poison the spiritual atmosphere, disrupting true unity and fellowship.
Boundaries for Healthy Environments
It is necessary to balance this decisive action with the biblical call to patiently endure external persecution. The righteous will often face scorn and reproach from the unbelieving world. However, enduring inevitable persecution from the outside world is fundamentally different from tolerating a disruptive, unrepentant scorner within a household, a close relationship, or a community of believers.
In practical Christian application, Proverbs 22:10 serves as a crucial, boundary-setting guideline. Whether navigating family dynamics, friendships, or broader communal relationships, recognizing that some continuous strife cannot be resolved through dialogue or compromise alone is a vital biblical insight. Sometimes, the only biblical path to lasting peace is separation. Once the mocking, divisive presence is finally cast out, the heavy tension breaks, the endless arguments cease, and a quiet, peaceful atmosphere can be beautifully restored.
