Proverbs 28:5

Posted on 18 May at 15:09

“Evil men understand not judgment: but they that seek the LORD understand all things.”

1. Context:The Book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings attributed primarily to King Solomon. Proverbs provide practical wisdom for daily living and address various aspects of life, including relationships, work, character, and morality.

Certainly! Let’s dive into a Bible study on Proverbs 28:5, using the King James Version (KJV) translation:

“Evil men understand not judgment: but they that seek the LORD understand all things.” (Proverbs 28:5, KJV)

2. Understanding the verse:

– “Evil men understand not judgment”: This portion highlights the lack of understanding or discernment possessed by individuals who engage in wickedness or unrighteousness. They fail to grasp the true nature of justice and lack insight into the consequences of their actions.

– “But they that seek the LORD understand all things”: In contrast to the evil men mentioned earlier, those who actively seek and pursue a relationship with the LORD (God) gain understanding in various matters. Seeking the LORD implies a desire for His wisdom, guidance, and righteousness, which leads to a deeper understanding of life and its complexities.

3. Key themes:

– Discernment: The verse emphasizes the importance of discernment or judgment. Evil individuals are portrayed as lacking this discernment, indicating their moral and spiritual blindness. On the other hand, seeking the LORD is presented as a means to gain understanding and wisdom in making righteous judgments.

– Seeking God: The verse encourages the pursuit of a relationship with God. It suggests that those who earnestly seek God and His ways will find illumination and insight in different areas of life.

– God’s omniscience: By stating that those who seek the LORD understand all things, the verse points to God’s role as the ultimate source of wisdom and knowledge. Seeking Him opens the door to greater understanding and insight into the world around us.

4. Application:

– Pursue righteousness: The verse highlights the importance of living righteously and seeking the LORD. As we align ourselves with God’s principles, we can gain discernment in our decision-making and navigate life’s challenges more effectively.

– Prayer and study: To seek the LORD, we need to spend time in prayer and engage in regular study of His Word, the Bible. These practices help us draw closer to God, deepen our understanding of His ways, and receive His guidance.

– Humility and teachability: Recognizing our need for God’s wisdom requires humility and a willingness to learn from Him. We should approach life with a teachable spirit, acknowledging that our understanding is limited and that God’s perspective far surpasses our own.
