Proverbs 28:6
Better is the poor that walketh in his uprightness, than he that is perverse in his ways, though he be rich.
Proverbs 28:6 (KJV)
Context
The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings attributed primarily to King Solomon. This verse belongs to a section that addresses justice, wealth, and righteousness. It compares two kinds of people: a poor person who walks in uprightness and a rich person who is perverse in his ways.
Meaning
The Hebrew word for “uprightness” means moral wholeness and consistency. The word “perverse” literally means “crooked” or “twisted,” describing someone whose ways are morally distorted. Some render “perverse in his ways” as “perverse in his two ways,” suggesting a double-minded or hypocritical person who pretends to follow God but walks a different path. The verse contrasts genuine, consistent character with duplicity, even when the latter is outwardly successful.
This is not a blanket endorsement of poverty or a condemnation of wealth. Rather, it elevates integrity above material prosperity. The poor upright person is better off than the rich perverse person because character matters more than comfort. A clear conscience and a right relationship with God are of greater worth than any material gain.
Biblical connections
Proverbs consistently teaches that the fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom and that righteousness is more valuable than wealth. This verse fits that pattern, calling readers to value character over possessions.
Application
This verse challenges us to examine our own walk. Are we truly upright, or only appearing so? It also comforts those who are poor but faithful, affirming that their condition is not a mark of God’s disfavor. Poverty with integrity is better than riches with perversity.
We can apply this by prioritizing godly character in all circumstances. When faced with a choice between doing what is right and gaining wealth through dishonest means, we must choose integrity. Contentment and righteousness bring true fulfillment, while corrupt actions lead to negative consequences and a diminished quality of life.
Reflection
Walking in uprightness aligns with God’s will and brings blessings, whereas a perverse lifestyle distances a person from God and may result in spiritual impoverishment. This verse reminds us to be content with our circumstances, recognizing that true fulfillment comes from walking in God’s ways.
