Proverbs 28:7
Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son: but he that is a companion of riotous men shameth his father.
Proverbs 28:7 (KJV)
Context
This proverb sets two paths before a son. One path is keeping the law, which means obeying God’s commandments with a sincere heart. The other path is companionship with riotous men, people who waste their lives in reckless and sinful behavior. The wise son chooses the first path and honors his father. The foolish son chooses the second and brings shame.
Meaning
In Proverbs, wisdom is not just knowledge. It is the skill of applying God’s truth to daily life. A wise son shows his wisdom by faithful obedience. The word “riotous” suggests gluttons or profligates, those who squander resources and live without restraint. Such companions lead a person away from God’s standards and into moral ruin.
Biblical connections
The verse echoes the command to honor parents, as seen in Exodus 20:12. A son’s conduct reflects on his family. When he chooses wise companions and obeys God, he brings honor. When he joins riotous men, he disgraces his father. The connection is direct: obedience and wise friendship uphold the family name.
Application
Believers today can examine their own friendships and choices. Do our companions encourage us to follow God’s Word, or do they pull us toward careless living? The proverb calls us to choose friends who help us obey, and to avoid those who lead us into sin. This is not about isolation but about wise association.
Reflection
True wisdom is inseparable from obedience. The verse does not promise wealth or ease, but it does promise honor. A life that honors God and family through disciplined, wise living brings lasting blessing. Let us consider whether our daily choices reflect the wisdom of a faithful son.
