Proverbs 27:26

The lambs are for thy clothing, and the goats are the price of the field.

Proverbs 27:26 (KJV)

This verse sits within a passage that urges careful attention to flocks and herds. In ancient Israel, sheep and goats were primary measures of wealth. Lambs supplied wool for clothing, while goats could be sold to raise money for land. The surrounding verses encourage diligence in tending these animals, promising that such care leads to lasting provision for a household.

The first phrase, “The lambs are for thy clothing,” points to the practical use of sheep: their wool becomes garments for warmth and decency. The second phrase, “the goats are the price of the field,” shows that goats were a form of currency. Selling them could provide the means to buy or secure property. Together, these images teach that faithful labor and wise management of resources yield tangible benefits: clothing, land, and daily bread. The verse also reminds us that God often provides through the ordinary resources He gives. In the ancient world, a family’s survival depended on careful use of what they had. Sheep and goats were not just animals; they were God’s provision in a tangible form. This wisdom is practical and timeless, encouraging believers to be diligent in their vocations and to trust God for provision.

This proverb echoes the broader biblical principle that God provides for His people through ordinary work. In Proverbs 27:23-27, the same theme appears: knowing the state of one’s flocks leads to security. The New Testament also affirms that diligent labor is honorable, as seen in 2 Thessalonians 3:10, where believers are reminded to work for their food. Such passages show that God’s care often comes through human effort and prudent stewardship. The principle is consistent: God blesses faithful work, and He uses our daily labor to meet our needs.

For today’s reader, the lesson is clear: take care of what God has entrusted to you. This includes your job, your money, your home, and your family. Just as a shepherd watches over the flock, you are called to manage your resources with attention and honesty. Hard work is not opposed to faith; it is a way of honoring God and providing for those who depend on you. Consider the specific resources God has placed in your care. How can you use them wisely? This might mean budgeting carefully, maintaining your possessions, or investing time in your relationships. Faithful stewardship is a daily choice, and it pleases God.

Consider your own daily responsibilities. Do you treat them as a sacred trust or as a burden? The verse invites you to see ordinary tasks as part of God’s design. When you work faithfully, you participate in His provision. Trust Him to bless your efforts, and remember that even small, consistent care can lead to lasting security. God sees your diligence, and He is faithful to supply what you need.
