Listen to this article

“He that by usury and unjust gain increaseth his substance, he shall gather it for him that will pity the poor.”

Understanding the Context: Proverbs is a book in the Old Testament known for its wisdom literature. It contains practical advice and observations on various aspects of life, providing guidance for righteous living. Proverbs 28:8 specifically addresses the issue of gaining wealth through usury and unjust means.

Exploring the Verse: a) "He that by usury and unjust gain increaseth his substance": This portion of the verse describes a person who accumulates wealth through usury and unfair business practices. Usury refers to charging excessive interest on loans or exploiting others financially. Unjust gain implies acquiring wealth through dishonest or unethical means.

b) "He shall gather it for him that will pity the poor": This part of the verse suggests that the wealth amassed through usury and unjust gain will ultimately be taken away from the wrongdoer and given to someone who shows compassion for the poor. In other words, the ill-gotten wealth will be redistributed to benefit those in need.

Interpreting the Verse: a) Condemnation of Unjust Means: The verse highlights God’s disapproval of gaining wealth through exploitation and dishonest practices. Usury and unjust gain go against the principles of fairness, justice, and integrity. Such actions demonstrate a lack of concern for the well-being of others and a disregard for God’s commands.

b) God’s Concern for the Poor: The verse emphasizes God’s care for the marginalized and oppressed, particularly the poor. God desires His followers to demonstrate compassion and help those in need. By redistributing the wealth acquired unjustly, God ensures that it benefits those who will use it for the betterment of society.

c) Divine Justice: The verse implies that God intervenes to correct injustices and restore balance. He holds individuals accountable for their actions, and ill-gotten wealth will not bring lasting prosperity or happiness. Instead, it will be taken away and given to those who exhibit a heart of compassion for the poor.

Application:

  • Ethical Business Practices: As believers, this verse encourages us to conduct our financial affairs with integrity and fairness. We should avoid exploiting others for personal gain and strive to engage in honest business practices.
  • Compassion for the Poor: The verse reminds us of our responsibility to show compassion and help those in need. We should actively seek ways to alleviate poverty and support initiatives that promote social justice and equality.
  • Trusting God’s Justice: When we witness instances of injustice, it’s essential to remember that God is ultimately in control. Even if it appears that the unscrupulous prosper, we can trust that God’s justice will prevail, and He will ensure that the wealth acquired through unjust means is ultimately used for the benefit of those who genuinely need it.

In conclusion, Proverbs 28:8 admonishes against gaining wealth through usury and unjust means while emphasizing God’s concern for the poor. It calls believers to practice ethical business conduct, demonstrate compassion for the marginalized, and trust in God’s justice.
