Ecclesiastes 7:12

For wisdom is a defence, and money is a defence: but the excellency of knowledge is, that wisdom giveth life to them that have it.

Ecclesiastes 7:12 (KJV)

King Solomon, known for his great wisdom, wrote Ecclesiastes. In this book he reflects on the meaning of life and the emptiness of worldly pursuits. This verse is part of his sober observations about what truly protects and sustains a person.

Solomon first says that wisdom is a defence. The Hebrew word for defence can mean a shadow, like a shelter that gives refreshment and safety. Wisdom acts as a shield, helping us make right choices and avoid the harm that comes from foolish decisions.

He also says that money is a defence. Money can provide security, comfort, and the means to meet daily needs. Yet money is temporary and can be lost or misused. It cannot give lasting peace or true fulfillment.

The verse then points to the excellency of knowledge. Knowledge here is not just information; it is insight gained through wisdom. The great value of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to those who have it. While money can protect for a time, wisdom preserves life itself. This includes sound judgment, discernment, and the ability to navigate challenges with prudence.

Scripture consistently urges the pursuit of wisdom. Proverbs 4:7 says, “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.” James 1:5 encourages us to ask God for wisdom, and 2 Timothy 2:15 urges diligent study of Scripture. True wisdom comes from the Lord, as Proverbs 2:6 affirms: “For the Lord giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding.” The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom (Proverbs 9:10), linking practical wisdom with a reverent relationship with God.

We should value wisdom as a treasure that brings life and security. Use money wisely, but do not trust in it as the ultimate source of safety. Seek wisdom from God through prayer, study of His Word, and obedience. As we grow in wisdom, we make choices that honour Him and lead to a fuller life.

Both wisdom and money offer defence, but only wisdom gives life. This truth calls us to examine where we place our confidence. May we pursue the knowledge that comes from God, applying it daily so that our lives bring glory to Him.
