I said, I will goe vp to the palme tree, I will take hold of the boughes thereof: now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose, like apples. Song of Solomon 7:8 (KJV)

The Song of Solomon, also called the Song of Songs or Canticles, is a poetic book of the Old Testament that presents a series of love poems between a bridegroom—often identified with Solomon—and his beloved, the Shulammite woman. The book celebrates the beauty of romantic love and is frequently interpreted allegorically as portraying the deep, passionate love between Christ and the Church.

Song of Solomon 7:8 belongs to a larger passage in which the bridegroom praises the beauty of his bride. In this verse the bridegroom declares his longing to be near his beloved, expressing both determination and eager anticipation.

The phrase “I will go up to the palm tree” invokes the palm as a symbol of beauty, strength, and victory in biblical culture. By saying he will ascend the palm, the bridegroom signals his intent to seek out his beloved with purposeful effort. “I will take hold of the boughs thereof” further conveys a desire to grasp the branches, a vivid picture of reaching out for intimate, physical connection.

The poetic image “now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine” likens the bride’s breasts to abundant, fertile grape clusters, suggesting sweetness, richness, and desirability. The accompanying line “and the smell of thy nose like apples” adds a sensory dimension, portraying her fragrance as fresh and pleasing, much like the scent of ripe apples.

A complementary comparison appears in the text: “as the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons.” This metaphor highlights the beloved’s pre‑eminence; just as an apple tree stands out among forest trees, the beloved stands out among all men.

Together these images portray a passionate yearning for intimacy and an admiration of the beloved’s unique beauty. Many readers understand the passage allegorically, seeing the bridegroom’s love for the bride as a picture of Christ’s love for the Church or God’s love for His people.

Application for today’s believer includes a reminder of the depth and intensity of God’s love, encouraging a heartfelt pursuit of closeness with Him. It also calls Christians to appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of each person within healthy, loving relationships.

In conclusion, Song of Solomon 7:8 captures the bridegroom’s fervent desire to be close to his beloved, celebrates her physical attractiveness, and underscores her singular value in his heart. The passage invites reflection on the significance of pursuing intimacy in human relationships and on understanding the profound love God has for His people.
