Song of Solomon 7:8

I said, I will go up to the palm tree, I will take hold of the boughs thereof: now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine, and the smell of thy nose like apples;

Song of Solomon 7:8 (KJV)

The Song of Solomon is a poetic book of the Old Testament, presenting a series of love poems between a bridegroom and his beloved. This verse belongs to a passage where the bridegroom praises the bride’s beauty. In the previous verse, her stature is compared to a palm tree and her breasts to its clusters. Here he declares his longing to be near her, expressing both determination and eager anticipation.

The phrase “I will go up to the palm tree” uses the palm as a symbol of beauty, strength, and victory in biblical culture. The palm tree was easy to climb because the rings left by lopped-off lower branches served as steps. By saying he will ascend the palm, the bridegroom signals his intent to seek out his beloved with purposeful effort. “I will take hold of the boughs thereof” conveys a desire to grasp the branches, a vivid picture of reaching out for intimate, physical connection. The poetic image “now also thy breasts shall be as clusters of the vine” likens her breasts to abundant, fertile grape clusters, suggesting sweetness, richness, and desirability. The line “and the smell of thy nose like apples” adds a sensory dimension, portraying her fragrance as fresh and pleasing, much like the scent of ripe apples.

A complementary comparison appears earlier in the book: “as the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons” (Song of Solomon 2:3). This metaphor highlights the beloved’s pre-eminence; just as an apple tree stands out among forest trees, the beloved stands out among all men. Together these images portray a passionate yearning for intimacy and an admiration of the beloved’s unique beauty. Many readers understand the passage allegorically, seeing the bridegroom’s love for the bride as a picture of Christ’s love for the Church or God’s love for His people.

For today’s believer, this verse reminds us of the depth and intensity of God’s love, encouraging a heartfelt pursuit of closeness with Him. It also calls Christians to appreciate the beauty and uniqueness of each person within healthy, loving relationships. The verse celebrates the goodness of marital intimacy as part of God’s design, and it invites us to embrace our loved ones with joyful, confident affection.

Song of Solomon 7:8 captures the bridegroom’s fervent desire to be close to his beloved, celebrates her physical attractiveness, and underscores her singular value in his heart. The passage invites reflection on the significance of pursuing intimacy in human relationships and on understanding the profound love God has for His people.
