Song of Solomon 7:10
I am my beloved’s, and his desire is toward me.
Song of Solomon 7:10 (KJV)
Context
The Song of Solomon, also called the Song of Songs, is a poetic book in the Old Testament. It uses vivid, metaphorical language to celebrate the love between a bride and her bridegroom. For centuries, readers have also understood it as a picture of the relationship between God and His people, or Christ and the Church.
In this verse, the bride speaks after the bridegroom has praised her beauty and drawn near to her. Her words are a response to that enjoyed intimacy. The assurance of belonging often follows the experience of the beloved’s presence and favor.
Meaning
The bride declares, “I am my beloved’s.” This is a strong statement of belonging, commitment, and exclusive devotion. It means she is not her own; she belongs to him. The second part, “his desire is toward me,” shows the bridegroom’s active longing and affection for her. Together, these words describe a relationship marked by both confident assurance and mutual desire.
The bride’s confidence is not based on her own merit. It rests on the relationship itself. She knows she is loved, and she rests in that secure bond.
Biblical connections
Similar declarations appear earlier in the Song, such as Song of Solomon 2:16 and 6:3. In those places, the bride and bridegroom express their mutual belonging. These repetitions emphasize the theme of secure, committed love. The bride’s words here are not a new idea but a confident echo of what has already been established.
For believers, this verse connects to the assurance of faith. We belong to Christ, and He desires us. As Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, we are not our own; we have been bought with a price. Our identity is found in Him, and we are called to live in a way that reflects that truth.
Application
This verse gives us confidence and security. Just as the bride rests in her beloved’s love, we can rest in God’s faithful love for us. His desire for us is not distant or uncertain; it is active and personal.
We are also reminded that our identity is not found in the world or in our achievements. We belong to Christ. Our lives should reflect this belonging in how we speak, act, and relate to others.
God desires an intimate relationship with us. We can respond to His love by seeking Him through prayer, reading His Word, and spending time in His presence. As we draw near to God, He draws near to us (James 4:8).
Reflection
This verse also models healthy, exclusive commitment in marriage. Each spouse belongs to the other and desires the other. The language of ownership and longing is appropriate within the covenant of marriage, reflecting God’s design for intimate love.
Take time to consider: Do you know, deep in your heart, that you belong to Christ? Do you believe that His desire is toward you? Let this verse renew your confidence in His love and draw you into closer fellowship with Him.
