Context
Song of Solomon, also called the Song of Songs, is a poetic book in the Old Testament attributed to King Solomon. It celebrates the love between a bride, the Shulammite woman, and her bridegroom. The word “come” is significant, for it echoes the calls Christ Himself makes earlier in the book. Here the bride uses the same word in imitation of Him, expressing an earnest longing for His presence and for the blessings of His love.
The field and the villages suggest places outside the private chamber, pointing to a desire to enjoy communion in different settings. The field can represent a place of growth and fruitfulness, while the villages may stand for the communities where believers gather. The bride’s request to “lodge in the villages” has been understood as a longing to visit the congregations of the saints, and she recognizes that she cannot do this work without her beloved’s company.
