Isaiah 3:9

Listen to this article

“The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves.”

Context:The book of Isaiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. The prophet Isaiah, inspired by God, delivers messages of warning, judgment, and hope to the people of Israel. Chapter 3 specifically addresses the wickedness and impending judgment that will befall Jerusalem and Judah due to their disobedience and rebellion against God.

“The shew of their countenance doth witness against them”: This phrase refers to the outward appearance and expression on their faces. It suggests that their facial expressions and demeanor reflect their true nature. In this case, the people’s countenances reveal their guilt and sinfulness.

“They declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not”: This statement compares the people’s behavior to the wickedness of Sodom, a city known for its immorality and depravity in the Old Testament. The people of Jerusalem openly engage in sinful acts and make no effort to hide or conceal their wrongdoing.

“Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves”: The word “woe” expresses sorrow, distress, and judgment. Here, it signifies a warning of impending judgment upon their souls. The people’s wickedness and sinful actions will ultimately bring harm and destruction upon themselves. Their evil deeds will have consequences that they will have to bear.
