Jeremiah receives a message from the Lord instructing him to abstain from taking a wife or having children, as a sign of the impending judgment on Judah. He is also forbidden to participate in mourning or celebrations, for the Lord will take away joy, gladness, and peace from the land. The people will suffer from famine, sword, and disease, and their dead bodies will be left unburied as a consequence of their wickedness.
The Lord declares that He will bring the people of Judah out of their land and scatter them among foreign nations because of their persistent disobedience. Despite their cries for help, the Lord will not show them mercy. The people’s idolatry and worship of false gods have brought them to this point of judgment.
Jeremiah prophesies that in the future, the people of Judah will no longer refer to God as the one who delivered their ancestors from Egypt but as the one who scattered them among the nations. Yet, after this time of punishment, the Lord promises to gather them back from the lands He has dispersed them to and restore them to their inheritance.
