Jeremiah 16:12

Listen to this article

“And ye have done worse than your fathers; for, behold, ye walk every one after the imagination of his evil heart, that they may not hearken unto me.”

Jeremiah 16:12 is part of a passage where the prophet Jeremiah delivers a message from God to the people of Judah, warning them about their sins and the consequences they will face because of their disobedience. In this verse, God expresses His disappointment with the people, highlighting that they have gone beyond the sins of their ancestors and are persistently following the desires of their own wicked hearts, which results in their failure to listen to Him.

To understand the context of this verse, it is important to look at the preceding verses as well. In Jeremiah 16:10-11, God declares that He will cause the joy and gladness of the people to cease. He will take away the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, so that there will be no feasting or celebrations in the land. This is a consequence of their disobedience and turning away from God.

In Jeremiah’s time, the people of Judah had fallen into idolatry and were worshiping false gods, engaging in immoral practices, and disregarding God’s laws and commands. They had forsaken the covenant relationship they had with God, which had been established through their ancestors. Despite the warnings of the prophets, including Jeremiah, the people did not turn back to God. Instead, they continued to indulge in their own wicked desires.

Jeremiah 16:12 emphasises the severity of their sins by stating that they have surpassed the sins of their forefathers. It indicates that their rebellion against God has reached an unprecedented level. The phrase “every one after the imagination of his evil heart” suggests that each person was following their own desires and cravings, rather than seeking after God’s will. Their hearts were corrupted, leading them away from God’s truth and righteousness.

Furthermore, the verse reveals that their refusal to listen to God was a deliberate choice. The people’s disobedience had caused them to become spiritually deaf, unwilling to heed the voice of God calling them to repentance and obedience. By rejecting God’s guidance, they isolated themselves from His blessings and protection, leaving themselves vulnerable to the judgment and consequences of their sinful actions.

This passage serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of persistent disobedience and the dangers of following our own wicked desires. It emphasises the importance of heeding God’s word, turning away from sin, and seeking after righteousness. The people of Judah failed to do so, and as a result, they would experience the judgment and discipline of God.

Overall, Jeremiah 16:12 presents a stern warning against the dangers of pursuing the desires of our own hearts at the expense of listening to and obeying God. It encourages us to examine our hearts, submit ourselves to God’s will, and follow His guidance in order to avoid the destructive consequences of sin.
