Jeremiah 16:13

Listen to this article

“Therefore will I cast you out of this land into a land that ye know not, neither ye nor your fathers; and there shall ye serve other gods day and night; where I will not shew you favour.”

Context:The book of Jeremiah is a prophetic book in the Old Testament. Jeremiah was a prophet who delivered God’s messages to the people of Judah, warning them of impending judgment due to their idolatry, disobedience, and injustice. In this particular verse, God speaks through Jeremiah to announce the punishment of exile for the people of Judah.

Exile as a consequence:God warns the people of Judah that as a consequence of their unfaithfulness and idolatry, they would be cast out of their own land into a foreign land. This was a severe punishment, as the land of Israel was a significant part of the covenant God made with His people. The exile was intended to discipline the people and make them realise the gravity of their sins.

Unknown land:God states that the land to which they would be exiled would be unfamiliar to them and their fathers. This emphasises the severity of their punishment. It also serves as a reminder that God is in control and has the power to uproot them from their established homeland and place them in a foreign land.

Worshiping other gods:In the foreign land of exile, the people of Judah would be compelled to serve other gods day and night. This is a consequence of their turning away from the true God and embracing idolatry. It highlights the irony of their actions, as they will be forced to serve the very gods they had chosen over the Lord.

Absence of favour:God declares that He will not show them favour in the foreign land. This signifies the withdrawal of His special protection, provision, and blessings. It emphasises the seriousness of their rebellion and serves as a reminder that God’s favour is conditional upon obedience and faithfulness.
