Isaiah 26:12

Lord, thou wilt ordain peace for us: for thou also hast wrought all our works in us.

Isaiah 26:12 (KJV)

Isaiah 26 is a song of praise and trust sung by God’s people. The chapter looks forward to the restoration and deliverance of Israel and to the security and peace that God will establish for them. In verse 12, the prophet speaks directly to the Lord, confessing that peace comes from Him alone.

The word “ordain” means that God appoints or sets in order peace for those who trust in Him. The Hebrew word for peace is “shalom,” which means far more than the absence of conflict. It includes well-being, harmony, and completeness—a wholeness that comes from being in a right relationship with God. This peace is both outward and inward, and it points to the full peace and prosperity that God’s people will enjoy in the age to come.

The second half of the verse, “for thou also hast wrought all our works in us,” emphasizes God’s sovereignty and power. The Hebrew word translated “wrought” can also mean “accomplished” or “worked.” It teaches that every good work and accomplishment in the lives of God’s people is ultimately the result of God’s own working in them. Even the works believers do are enabled and empowered by God’s grace and initiative.

This verse connects with the broader biblical promise that God Himself will establish peace for His people. The same divine power that ordains peace also works in believers to produce good works, so that all glory belongs to God. This truth is echoed in the promise that the zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish the peace and prosperity of His people in the latter day, as seen in Isaiah 9:7.

Isaiah 26:12 encourages believers to rely on God’s guidance and strength as they seek to live according to His purposes. It humbles us, reminding us that apart from God we can do nothing of lasting value. It also gives us confidence to pray for peace, knowing that the God who has already worked in us will continue to establish peace in our lives.

This verse calls us to give glory and credit to God for all that He accomplishes through us. It reminds us that God is the ultimate source of peace and the One who equips and empowers us to carry out His work in the world. As we trust in Him, we can rest in the certainty that He who began a good work in us will bring it to completion.
