Isaiah 26:13
O Lord our God, other lordes besides thee haue had dominion ouer vs: but by thee only will we make mention of thy Name. Isaiah 26:13 (KJV)
O LORD our God,
other lords besides thee have had dominion over us:
but by thee only will we make mention of thy name. Isaiah 26:13 (KJV)
Historical Context: The book of Isaiah was written by the prophet Isaiah during a time of great political upheaval in Israel. The Israelites had experienced the consequences of turning away from God and seeking alliances with foreign nations, which led to subjugation and loss of independence. Isaiah warned of judgment, promised restoration, and foretold the ultimate salvation of God’s people.
Acknowledging God’s Lordship: In this verse the people of Israel confess that they had allowed other lords—idols, false gods, and foreign powers—to have dominion over them. They recognize that only Yahweh is the true Lord and the one worthy of worship. This confession reflects a broader biblical theme that Israel’s reliance on anything other than the living God was erroneous.
Repentance and Returning to God: The passage marks a turning point. The Israelites express repentance for their past actions and declare their intention to forsake the worship of false gods. They understand that true deliverance and salvation can come only from God, and they desire to restore a right relationship with Him, relying solely on His power and sovereignty.
Exclusivity of God’s Name: The latter clause, “but by thee only will we make mention of thy name,” emphasizes the uniqueness and exclusivity of God’s name. It signifies a commitment to no longer invoke or trust in any other entity, but to honor and call upon the name of the one true God, Yahweh.
Application for Believers Today: Although the verse belongs to a prophetic song describing future restoration, its principles speak to believers today. We are urged to examine our lives for any idols—whether persons, possessions, or pursuits—that have taken dominion over us. Like the Israelites, we should repent, return fully to God, and make mention of His name alone, trusting exclusively in His sovereign care.
