Isaiah 34:16

Seek ye out of the book of the Lord, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them.

Isaiah 34:16 (KJV)

Isaiah 34:16 belongs to a prophecy of judgment against the nations, with particular focus on Edom, a historical enemy of Israel. The preceding verses describe the desolation that God will bring upon the land. In this setting, the verse calls readers to “seek ye out of the book of the Lord, and read,” urging them to actively study the Scriptures to gain wisdom and understanding. The “book of the Lord” refers to the written Word of God, the Scriptures.

The statement “no one of these shall fail” affirms the reliability and trustworthiness of God’s Word. It declares that the prophecies and promises contained within the Scriptures will be fulfilled without fail, highlighting the faithfulness of God to bring His word to completion. This assurance provides confidence to those who place their trust in Him.

The phrase “none shall want her mate” is presented with two complementary interpretations. First, it suggests that God’s Word is complete and self-sufficient, lacking nothing and requiring no supplemental writings or teachings. Second, it indicates that every prophecy or spoken word will find its fulfillment and counterpart, implying that all that the Lord declares will be brought to pass. In the immediate context, it also means that every creature mentioned in the judgment scene will be present and complete, none missing and none lacking its companion.

The verse grounds this certainty in two divine actions: “for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them.” God’s spoken command initiates the decree, and His Spirit accomplishes the gathering, showing the unity of God’s word and His Spirit in fulfilling His purposes. The words spoken by the Lord carry power because they are the result of His command and the work of His Spirit, underscoring that the Scriptures are not merely human compositions but are inspired by God.

Isaiah 34:16 encourages believers to seek wisdom and guidance from the Word of God, assuring them of its reliability, completeness, and divine authority. As believers engage with the Scriptures and align their lives with its teachings, they can find direction, comfort, and assurance in their relationship with God. The verse also teaches the certainty of divine judgment and the active role of the Spirit in executing God’s will, prompting readers to trust in the fulfillment of all God’s promises and warnings.
