Isaiah 38:8
Behold, I will bring again the shadow of the degrees, which is gone down in the sun dial of Ahaz, ten degrees backward. So the sun returned ten degrees, by which degrees it was gone down.
Isaiah 38:8 (KJV)
Context
Isaiah 38:8 belongs to the account of King Hezekiah’s illness and recovery. Hezekiah, the twelfth king of Judah, was a righteous ruler who removed idolatry and restored true worship. When he became gravely ill, the prophet Isaiah told him he would die. Hezekiah prayed earnestly, reminding God of his faithful service, and the Lord heard him.
God promised to add fifteen years to Hezekiah’s life and gave a sign to confirm that promise. The sign involved the sundial of Ahaz, a timekeeping device built by Hezekiah’s predecessor. God declared that the shadow would move backward ten degrees, and it did. This miracle accompanied the healing and assured Hezekiah that the deliverance was real.
Meaning
The backward movement of the shadow defied natural law, demonstrating God’s sovereignty over time and creation. He is not bound by the normal constraints of the physical world. The sign also revealed God’s mercy toward a faithful servant who sought Him with a sincere heart.
The event teaches several lessons. First, it emphasizes the power of prayer; Hezekiah’s fervent petition moved God to act. Second, it shows that God can reverse what seems irreversible, working beyond natural limitations to accomplish His purposes. Third, it highlights God’s faithfulness—He gave a specific sign and fulfilled it exactly, encouraging believers to trust His word and timing.
Biblical connections
The same miracle is recorded in 2 Kings 20:8-11, where Hezekiah requested the sign, confirming the consistency of the biblical account. The event also prefigures the ultimate reversal of death and the hope of resurrection, as God demonstrates His power over the created order.
Application
For believers, this verse encourages trust in God’s promises even when circumstances seem hopeless. It reminds us that God hears and answers prayer, that He is not limited by natural laws, and that His steadfast love and mercy are present for those who turn to Him in need.
Reflection
When we face situations that appear beyond repair, we can remember that the God who turned back the shadow is the same God who watches over our lives. His power is not diminished by time or circumstance, and His promises remain sure.
