Isaiah 41:20

That they may see, and know, and consider, and understand together, that the hand of the Lord hath done this, and the Holy One of Israel hath created it.

Isaiah 41:20 (KJV)

This verse concludes a passage in which God, through the prophet Isaiah, comforts His people. In the preceding verses, God promises to provide for them, help them, and make them victorious over their enemies. Here He declares the purpose of His extraordinary actions: that people may see, know, consider, and understand together that the hand of the LORD has done this, and the Holy One of Israel has created it.

The four verbs—see, know, consider, and understand—are not synonyms. They describe a progression from perception to deep comprehension. God’s works are meant to be visible and evident, leading people to recognize His authority, wisdom, and sovereignty. The phrase “the hand of the LORD” signifies God’s direct, powerful intervention in history. It is His power and authority that accomplish deliverance and provision. The title “the Holy One of Israel” emphasizes God’s unique, set-apart nature and His faithfulness to His covenant with Israel. The phrase “hath created it” affirms that God is the ultimate creator and sustainer of all things, and that everything happens under His control and subject to His divine will.

This verse echoes the broader biblical theme that God’s redemptive acts are designed to lead people to acknowledge Him as the sole agent and Creator of these works. It also serves as a testimony to the nations, demonstrating God’s supremacy over all idols and false gods. The call to “see” and “know” is not merely for Israel’s benefit; it is a public demonstration that the LORD alone is God, and that no idol or human power can rival His sovereign work.

God desires that His people perceive, recognize, reflect upon, and comprehend the works He performs on their behalf. This calls believers to reflect on God’s works, understand His power, and recognize Him as the Creator and sustainer of all things. It encourages a deep and abiding trust in Him, acknowledging His involvement in every aspect of life. The verse reminds believers of God’s sovereignty, faithfulness, and power, and calls them to a mindset of gratitude, praise, and reliance on Him. When we see God’s hand at work, we are to move beyond mere observation to a settled conviction that He is the Holy One who keeps His covenant promises.

Consider the ways God has acted in your life. Are you seeing, knowing, considering, and understanding His hand at work? Let this verse lead you to worship the Holy One of Israel, who alone creates and sustains all things.
