Isaiah 41:25
I have raised up one from the north, and he shall come: from the rising of the sun shall he call upon my name: and he shall come upon princes as upon morter, and as the potter treadeth clay.
Isaiah 41:25 (KJV)
Context
Isaiah 41:25 belongs to a larger passage in which God addresses the nations and delivers comfort to His people. In the preceding verses, God challenges idols and false gods to present their case and predict future events. He declares that He alone is God and proves His power by announcing what is to come.
Meaning
The identity of the one raised up from the north is not explicitly named in this verse. Based on the surrounding context, many scholars understand this as a prophecy of Cyrus the Great, the Persian king. Cyrus came from the north and east, and he later allowed the Jewish exiles to return to Jerusalem and rebuild the temple.
The phrase “from the rising of the sun” points to the east, the direction of Persia. That this figure will call upon God’s name means he will acknowledge the true God and seek His guidance, even though he is not part of the Israelite community. God can use foreign rulers to accomplish His purposes.
The imagery of coming upon princes as mortar and treading clay like a potter shows the total authority God gives this ruler. Human power and resistance are as fragile as clay under the feet of the one God has raised. This is not the strength of the ruler himself, but the strength of the God who raised him.
Biblical connections
This verse stands in contrast to the impotence of idols, which cannot predict or control events. God alone declares the future and brings it to pass. The same divine sovereignty that raised Cyrus also assures Israel that God is in control of history and will deliver them.
Application
This prophecy reminds believers that God’s sovereignty extends over all nations and rulers. He can raise up leaders from unexpected places to fulfill His plans. It encourages trust in God’s providence, even when world events seem uncertain, and calls us to acknowledge His authority over every power.
Reflection
God’s ability to use a pagan king for the good of His people shows that no human power stands outside His control. The same God who raised Cyrus is at work in our own times, guiding history toward His purposes. We can rest in His wisdom and timing.
