Isaiah 41:25

Posted on 18 May at 14:08

I haue raised vp one from the North, and he shall come: from the rising of the Sunne shall he call vpon my name, and he shall come vpon princes as vpon morter, and as the potter treadeth clay. Isaiah 41:25 (KJV)

I have raised up

one from the north, and he shall come: from the rising of the sun shall he call upon my name: and he shall come upon princes as upon morter, and as the potter treadeth clay. Isaiah 41:25 (KJV)

Isaiah 41:25 is part of a larger passage in the book of Isaiah where God addresses the nations and delivers messages of comfort and hope to His people. The preceding verses in Isaiah 41 depict God’s sovereignty and power over the nations. God challenges the idols and false gods to present their case and demonstrate their ability to predict future events. He asserts that He alone is God and declares the future as a testimony to His power and authority.

The One Raised Up: The identity of the person being raised up from the north is not explicitly mentioned in this verse. However, based on the context of the passage, some scholars suggest that this prophecy may refer to the rise of the Persian king Cyrus the Great. Cyrus, a conqueror from the north, played a significant role in the history of Israel. He was instrumental in allowing the Jewish exiles to return to their homeland and rebuild the temple in Jerusalem after the Babylonian captivity.

Calling upon God’s Name: The verse states that the one from the north will call upon God’s name from the rising of the sun. This signifies that this person will recognize and acknowledge the true God. It suggests that this figure will seek God’s guidance and protection, recognizing God’s authority and sovereignty.

Conquering Princes: The verse continues by stating that this individual will come upon princes as upon mortar, and as the potter treads clay. This imagery conveys the idea that the person raised up by God will have the power and authority to overcome rulers and conquer nations. It symbolizes the strength and dominance this figure will possess, signifying God’s favour and assistance.

Overall, Isaiah 41:25 is a prophecy that speaks of a figure raised up by God, who will come from the north and call upon God’s name. This person will have the power to conquer and overcome princes and rulers. It is important to note that while this verse has historical significance in relation to Cyrus, it also carries broader theological implications. It reminds us of God’s sovereignty and His ability to raise up and use individuals, even those outside the Israelite community, to accomplish His purposes. It encourages believers to trust in God’s providence and acknowledge His authority over all nations and rulers.
