Isaiah 41:27 is found within a larger section of the book of Isaiah where God speaks through the prophet Isaiah to comfort and reassure the Israelites. In this verse, God promises to bring good news to Jerusalem.
Historical Context: During the time of Isaiah, the Israelites were facing the threat of invasion and exile by the Assyrian empire. The nation of Judah, with Jerusalem as its capital, was surrounded by powerful enemies and faced the potential destruction of their land and the Temple. However, God through the prophet Isaiah provided messages of hope, assurance, and future restoration.
“The first shall say to Zion”: The “first” mentioned in this verse refers to someone who will bring good tidings to Zion, which symbolizes Jerusalem or the people of Israel. This can be understood as a messenger or a herald who proclaims good news to the people.
“Behold, behold them”: The repetition of “behold” emphasizes the importance and urgency of the message. It implies that the people of Zion should pay close attention and take note of the news being delivered. The phrase suggests that something significant and noteworthy is about to happen.
“I will give to Jerusalem one that bringeth good tidings”: God promises to provide Jerusalem with someone who brings good tidings, which implies a message of deliverance, restoration, or salvation. This person may be a messenger who announces the end of their captivity or the impending restoration of Jerusalem.
