Luke 8:14

Posted on 18 May at 14:08

And that which fell among thornes, are they, which when they haue heard, goe forth, and are choked with cares and riches, and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruite to perfection. Luke 8:14 (KJV)

Luke 8:4‑15 records the Parable of the Sower, where Jesus teaches about the different responses people have to the Word of God. In Luke 8:14 He explains the meaning of the seed that fell among thorns. The seed among thorns represents those who hear the Word of God but are hindered by the cares, riches, and pleasures of this life. These individuals are initially receptive to the message, yet their hearts become preoccupied with worldly concerns, causing the Word to be choked and become unfruitful.

The cares of life refer to anxieties, worries, and concerns that distract and overwhelm the person. The deceitfulness of riches can lead to a love for wealth and material possessions, becoming a stumbling block for spiritual growth. The pleasures of life may include worldly indulgences and sinful desires that take precedence over a deep relationship with God.

Application:

Prioritise the Word of God. It is important to value and prioritise God’s Word above the distractions and temptations of this world. Make time for regular Bible study, prayer, and meditation to cultivate a deeper understanding and relationship with God.

Guard against worldly distractions. Be aware of the cares, riches, and pleasures that can choke your spiritual growth. Regularly examine your heart and priorities to ensure that nothing hinders your relationship with God.

Seek a balanced life. While it is necessary to fulfil responsibilities and enjoy God’s blessings in this life, ensure that these things do not take precedence over your devotion to God. Seek a balance where your actions and choices align with God’s will.

Develop spiritual disciplines. Cultivate disciplines such as prayer, fasting, and simplicity to guard against being overtaken by worldly concerns. These disciplines help to maintain a clear focus on God and His purposes for your life.

Choose godly values. Align your values with God’s Word and pursue things that have eternal significance. Seek to bear spiritual fruit such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self‑control (Galatians 5:22‑23).

Remember, Jesus’s teaching in this verse encourages us to guard our hearts and prioritise our relationship with God above the distractions of this world. By doing so, we can bear spiritual fruit and live a life that glorifies God.
