Luke 8:7

Posted on 18 May at 14:08

And some fell among thornes, and the thornes sprang vp with it, and choked it. Luke 8:7 (KJV)

Context: Luke 8:4‑15 contains the Parable of the Sower, where Jesus shares a story about a sower who sows seeds and the various types of soil they fall on. This verse specifically focuses on the seed that falls among thorns.

Symbolism of the seed: In this parable, the seed represents the Word of God, the Gospel message. It is the message of salvation, God’s love, and the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Symbolism of the thorns: The thorns represent the cares, riches, and pleasures of this world that can distract and hinder the growth of God’s Word in a person’s life. They symbolize the worries, materialism, and enticements that can choke out the spiritual life and prevent the seed from taking root.

Spiritual application: This verse teaches us an important lesson about the condition of our hearts and the obstacles that can hinder our spiritual growth:

  • The heart as soil: Just as different types of soil receive the seed differently, our hearts can be receptive or unreceptive to God’s Word. We need to cultivate a heart that is open, receptive, and ready to receive and nurture the seed of God’s Word.
  • The dangers of worldly distractions: The thorns that choke the seed symbolize the distractions and worldly concerns that can hinder our spiritual growth. They can include worries, anxieties, the pursuit of wealth, and the pursuit of worldly pleasures. We need to be aware of these distractions and prioritise our relationship with God above all else.
  • Guarding against spiritual neglect: The thorns in the parable indicate that neglecting our spiritual life can have serious consequences. If we allow the cares and pleasures of this world to take precedence over our spiritual well‑being, our spiritual life can wither and die. We must prioritise time with God, reading and meditating on His Word, prayer, and fellowship with other believers.
  • Cultivating a fruitful life: To ensure that God’s Word takes root and bears fruit in our lives, we need to actively remove the thorns of worldly distractions. This involves making deliberate choices to prioritise God and His Kingdom, seeking first His righteousness (Matthew 6:33), and aligning our lives with His will.
