Isaiah 59:11

We roar all like bears, and mourn sore like doves: we look for judgment, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far off from us.

Isaiah 59:11 (KJV)

In Isaiah 59, the prophet Isaiah confronts the people of Israel about their sins and the consequences they face. Their iniquities have separated them from God, so their cries for help seem unanswered. This verse captures their collective lamentation and longing for judgment and salvation.

Isaiah uses vivid figurative language to portray the people’s state. Their roaring like bears symbolizes fierce anger or distress, while their mourning like doves reflects sorrow and lamentation. This imagery conveys their anguish and helplessness as they look for judgment and salvation, but find neither.

The people desire judgment, understanding that God’s righteousness demands justice for sin. They also yearn for salvation, recognizing their need for deliverance from sin’s consequences. Yet salvation feels far off, indicating a sense of hopelessness and distance from God.

The chapter emphasizes that the calamities of the Jews are not due to a lack of saving power in God, but to their own enormous sins. Salvation is only of God, and the people’s experience of waiting for justice that does not come is a powerful expression of sin’s consequences and the desperate need for divine intervention.

This verse reminds believers today of sin’s consequences and the importance of seeking God’s justice and salvation. It prompts self-examination and repentance of sins that may hinder our relationship with God. We are called to seek His righteousness, understanding that salvation comes from Him alone.

  • Hope in the Gospel: While Israel felt salvation was far off, we have assurance through Jesus Christ. In Him, we find forgiveness, redemption, and reconciliation with God. The Gospel brings hope to those who feel distant from God, offering restoration and salvation.

When we feel distant from God, we can remember that our sins, not His power, create the barrier. Yet through Christ, salvation is near to all who call on Him. Let us turn from sin and trust in His deliverance.
