Isaiah 61:2

To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all that mourn;

Isaiah 61:2 (KJV)

This verse belongs to Isaiah’s prophecy about the coming Messiah and the purpose of His ministry. Jesus Himself quoted it in the synagogue to declare His mission (Luke 4:18-19), stopping before the phrase about vengeance to show that His first coming inaugurated the era of grace.

“To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord” recalls the Year of Jubilee, when liberty was proclaimed, debts were forgiven, and land was restored. Jesus came to fulfill the ultimate Jubilee, bringing freedom, forgiveness, and spiritual restoration to all who believe. “And the day of vengeance of our God” reveals that the same divine action that brings deliverance to the oppressed also brings just recompense to the wicked. This is not a contradiction but a coherent expression of God’s justice and mercy. While Jesus did not fulfill this aspect during His first coming, it points to His second coming when He will bring final judgment. “To comfort all that mourn” promises active consolation to the brokenhearted and grieving, highlighting God’s compassionate nature and His desire to heal His people in distress.

The pairing of favor and vengeance shows that God’s salvation and judgment are two sides of the same coin. The acceptable year is now, but the full day of vengeance and ultimate comfort are yet to come, reflecting the already/not-yet nature of God’s kingdom.

Believers are called to proclaim both the goodness of God’s favor and the seriousness of His judgment, living in the tension of present comfort through the Spirit and future hope of complete restoration. This verse also challenges us to be agents of comfort to those who mourn, reflecting God’s own heart and trusting that He will ultimately set all things right.

God’s comfort is not mere sympathy but the active consolation of One who binds up the brokenhearted and turns mourning into joy. In a world of suffering, we can patiently endure, knowing that God’s justice and mercy will prevail.
