And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.

Context

Isaiah 60 is a chapter that speaks about the future glory of Zion and the restoration of God’s people. It portrays a time of spiritual and physical renewal when God’s light and glory would shine upon Jerusalem. In the preceding verses, the prophet calls the city to arise and shine because the Lord’s light and glory have come upon her, dispelling the darkness that covered the earth. This setting shows that the light is not something the city produces by itself; it is the Lord’s own glory that makes Zion radiant.

Meaning

The light in this verse represents God’s presence, truth, and salvation. It is the divine favour that brings illumination and hope. The “brightness of thy rising” points to the radiant glory of God’s people as His light dawns upon them, a glory that would draw the nations. The Gentiles—the peoples outside Israel—are pictured coming to this light, and kings are drawn to its brightness. This signifies that both ordinary people and powerful rulers will be attracted to the revelation of God’s salvation. The verse emphasizes the inclusion of the Gentiles in God’s redemptive plan, a theme that culminates in the New Testament.

Biblical connections

This prophecy finds its ultimate fulfilment in Jesus Christ. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus became the light of the world (John 8:12). He fulfilled the Messianic prophecies of Isaiah, and through Him, salvation is offered to both Jews and Gentiles (Acts 13:47-48). The coming of the wise men from the East to worship the infant Jesus (Matthew 2:1-12) can be seen as a foreshadowing of Gentile kings seeking the brightness of Zion’s rising. Revelation 21:24 also reflects this promise, showing the nations walking in the light of the New Jerusalem. The Targum, an ancient Aramaic paraphrase, renders the phrase as “nations shall walk in thy light,” and Revelation 21:24 interprets this as the nations of the saved, truly regenerated and converted persons, walking in the light of the New Jerusalem.

Following Christ’s ascension, the early church experienced the fulfilment of this prophecy as the Gospel spread to the Gentiles. The apostles, led by Paul, carried the message of salvation to the nations, and many Gentiles came to know Christ and were included in the family of God. Today, Isaiah 60:3 reminds us that the light of God’s truth and the glory of His kingdom continue to shine forth. The Gospel is still being proclaimed, and people from all backgrounds and cultures are being drawn to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. As believers, we have the privilege and responsibility to be vessels of that light, sharing the love and truth of Christ with those around us.

This verse foreshadows the expansion of God’s salvation beyond Israel to encompass people from all nations.
