Isaiah 60:22

A little one shall become a thousand, and a small one a strong nation: I the Lord will hasten it in his time.

Isaiah 60:22 (KJV)

Isaiah 60 closes with a prophetic vision of hope and restoration for Israel. The chapter depicts the future glory of Zion, when light, blessing, and the gathering of nations reveal God’s favor. This final verse serves as a climactic assurance of that promise.

The phrase “a little one shall become a thousand” emphasizes extraordinary growth. Even when God’s people are few or seem insignificant, He can multiply them abundantly. The imagery of a small group becoming a multitude points to God’s power to bring exponential increase.

The next phrase, “and a small one a strong nation,” reinforces that God can transform the weak into a powerful and influential force. His strength is not limited by human standards or circumstances. He can raise up a feeble group and empower them to become a mighty nation under His guidance.

The verse concludes, “I the LORD will hasten it in his time.” The Hebrew word for “hasten” conveys swiftness, yet it is qualified by “in his time,” showing that God’s timing is perfect and purposeful. The use of “LORD” emphasizes His sovereignty and authority over the fulfillment of these promises.

This promise echoes God’s covenant faithfulness seen throughout Scripture, such as His assurance to Abraham that his descendants would be as numerous as the stars (Genesis 15:5). It also connects to the New Testament hope of spiritual multiplication and strength through God’s power.

For believers today, this verse assures that God can take the smallest and weakest among us and bring about extraordinary growth, strength, and blessing. It encourages trust in God’s timing, even when fulfillment seems delayed, and reminds us that He both initiates and completes His work.

God’s promises are certain, and His timing is never late. When we feel small or insignificant, we can rest in the truth that He who promised is faithful and will hasten it in His time.
