Isaiah 60:20

Thy sun shall no more go down; neither shall thy moon withdraw itself: for the Lord shall be thine everlasting light, and the days of thy mourning shall be ended.

Isaiah 60:20 (KJV)

Isaiah 60 belongs to a prophetic vision of Zion’s future glory and restoration. The prophet speaks to a people facing political turmoil and spiritual decline, yet he declares that God will transform their circumstances. In this chapter, the promises center on the city’s restoration and the blessings that await God’s people. Verse 20 follows the declaration in Isaiah 60:19 that the Lord will be the everlasting light and glory of His people, and it leads into verse 21, which speaks of a righteous people inheriting the land forever.

The verse uses poetic imagery of the sun and moon to describe a state where darkness and sorrow are completely removed. The sun will no longer go down, and the moon will not withdraw itself, meaning that the cycles of earthly life—marked by decline, night, and change—will cease. The Lord Himself becomes the everlasting light, replacing the created lights that govern time and seasons. This signifies a perpetual state of divine favor and unending joy in His presence. The second half of the verse promises that the days of mourning shall be ended, pointing to a complete removal of sorrow, pain, and tears.

The phrase “the LORD shall be thine everlasting light” speaks of the eternal presence of God in the lives of His people, providing spiritual illumination, guidance, and revelation. The promise that mourning will end finds its ultimate fulfillment in the person and work of Jesus Christ; through His death and resurrection, He offers healing, hope, and victory over sin, death, and sorrow (Revelation 21:4).

Isaiah 60:20 encourages believers with the hope of a glorious future in the presence of God. It reminds us that in Christ, we have access to eternal light, wisdom, and guidance. As followers of Jesus, we can find comfort and hope in knowing that our present struggles and sorrows are temporary. Through faith in Christ, we have the assurance that one day all sorrow will cease, and we will experience the fullness of joy in His presence. This promise also carries present significance: God’s light and comfort are available even in times of trouble, and mourning will not last forever. The verse encourages steadfast hope in God’s promises and confidence in His sovereign plan to bring about a glorious future for His people.
