Isaiah 63:3
I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment.
Isaiah 63:3 (KJV)
Context
Isaiah 63:3 belongs to the larger oracle of Isaiah 63:1-6, where the prophet portrays a majestic figure coming from Edom, the region south of Judah, with garments stained red by blood. The passage identifies this figure as one who “speaks in righteousness, mighty to save,” underscoring divine authority. The imagery of treading the winepress alone depicts the act of judgment as carried out solely by God, without any companion or helper.
Meaning
The winepress serves as a metaphor for God’s wrath and judgment upon the wicked. It conveys God’s righteous anger and His determined resolve to confront and punish the enemies of His people. The verse stresses the isolation of the divine judge: no human or created being joins Him in the execution of divine wrath, highlighting that the fullness of God’s justice cannot be shared or fully comprehended by anyone else.
The description of blood being sprinkled on the garments and the raiment being stained illustrates the severity and thoroughness of the judgment. It vividly portrays the extent of destruction inflicted upon the foes of God’s people, showing the figure trampling and conquering the enemies with unyielding fury. This solitary action emphasizes God’s sovereign and exclusive role in executing judgment, leaving no doubt about the outcome.
Application
Overall, the passage conveys a powerful message of divine vengeance and deliverance. It assures God’s people that He is aware of their suffering and will bring judgment upon their adversaries. Moreover, it reminds believers that God’s justice and salvation are inseparable; the victory over the enemies brings redemption and restoration for His people. The verse thus captures the essence of divine judgment, the singular authority of the divine judge, and the faithful promise that God will defend and deliver His people despite the severity of His wrath. For believers, this affirms that God is fully capable of defending His people and executing judgment without human aid, bringing comfort to the faithful that God will vindicate them.
