Isaiah 66:2
For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the Lord: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.
Isaiah 66:2 (KJV)
Context
This verse stands in the concluding chapter of Isaiah, where the prophet delivers God’s message to Israel. The opening declaration that God’s hand has made all things establishes His absolute sovereignty and creative power. Everything that exists, past and present, owes its being to Him. This foundation makes the verse’s central contrast striking: the Creator of the universe does not look to the powerful or self-sufficient, but to the humble and repentant.
Meaning
The latter part of the verse describes the person to whom God looks with favor. Three qualities define this person. First, he is poor, recognizing his spiritual need and dependence on God’s grace. Second, he has a contrite spirit, being broken and repentant over sin. Third, he trembles at God’s word, showing deep reverence and submission to divine instruction. These qualities reflect a heart that takes God seriously and seeks to align with His will.
God values the condition of the heart more than external rituals or achievements. True worship is not about human effort but about humility, contrition, and reverence for God’s revelation. The God who made all things condescends to notice the lowly, making His grace all the more remarkable.
Biblical connections
This teaching echoes Psalm 51:17, where David declares that the sacrifices of God are a broken spirit and a contrite heart. Both passages affirm that God delights in genuine humility rather than mere outward observance.
Application
This verse calls for self-examination. Do we approach God with pride or with a broken and contrite spirit? Do we tremble at His word, or treat it lightly? Cultivating these qualities draws us nearer to God and deepens our relationship with Him.
Reflection
God’s sovereign majesty makes His attention to the humble a profound comfort. The One who holds all creation in His hand looks with favor on those who come to Him in humility and faith. His creative power, which brought all things into being, is the same power that sustains and notices the lowly. This truth invites us to rest in His care, knowing that the God who made the heavens and the earth also bends down to receive the contrite heart.
