Jeremiah 11:21
Therefore thus saith the Lord of the men of Anathoth, that seeke thy life, saying; Prophecie not in the Name of the Lord, that thou die not by our hand: Jeremiah 11:21 (KJV)
Context: Jeremiah was called by God to be a prophet to the nations (Jeremiah 1:5), and his ministry involved speaking God’s words, warning the people of Judah about their sins, and calling them to repentance. However, his message was often met with opposition, rejection, and threats.
Anathoth: Anathoth was a town located about three miles northeast of Jerusalem. It was the birthplace of Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:1) and was inhabited by members of the priestly lineage. It is significant that the threat against Jeremiah’s life came from his own townspeople, who did not want him prophesying in the name of the Lord.
The Threat: The people of Anathoth sought to silence Jeremiah’s prophetic message by threatening his life. They demanded that he not prophesy in the name of the Lord, warning him that if he continued, they would kill him.
Jeremiah’s Response: Jeremiah faced numerous challenges and threats throughout his prophetic ministry, but he remained steadfast in his obedience to God. Despite the danger he faced, he continued to faithfully proclaim the message given to him by the Lord. He was determined to fulfill his calling regardless of the opposition he encountered.
Faithfulness in the face of opposition: Jeremiah’s response teaches us the importance of remaining faithful to God’s call, even when faced with opposition or threats. As believers, we may encounter resistance when we stand for the truth, but we should not compromise our obedience to God.
Trusting God’s protection: Despite the threat against his life, Jeremiah trusted in the Lord’s protection. As we face challenges and threats, we can find comfort in knowing that God is our refuge and strength. He will guide and guard us as we walk in His ways.
The cost of obedience: Jeremiah’s willingness to continue prophesying despite the danger highlights the sacrifices that may come with obeying God’s calling. It reminds us that following God’s will may require us to endure hardships, but He will provide the strength and grace to fulfill His purposes.
