Jeremiah 23:4

Posted on 18 May at 15:01

“And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them: and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be lacking, saith the LORD.”

1. Context: Jeremiah 23 is a chapter that contains a message of judgment against the false prophets and leaders of Israel who were misleading God’s people. In the preceding verses, God speaks against the shepherds who scattered His flock (the people of Israel) and promises to gather them back. Jeremiah 23:4 is part of God’s promise to restore His people by providing good shepherds.

2. God’s Provision of Shepherds: In this verse, God declares that He will set up shepherds over His people who will genuinely care for them and fulfil their needs. The role of a shepherd is to guide, protect, and provide for the flock. God promises to raise up leaders who will fulfil these responsibilities faithfully.

3. Spiritual Shepherds: While this verse can be applied to physical shepherds and leaders in Israel’s context, it also has a broader spiritual significance. In the New Testament, Jesus is referred to as the “Good Shepherd” (John 10:11). As believers, we can understand this verse as a foreshadowing of Jesus, who came to shepherd His people and provide for their spiritual needs.

4. Feeding and Provision: The shepherds God sets up will “feed” His people. This implies providing nourishment, guidance, and teaching. God’s people will no longer lack spiritually or be led astray. The good shepherds will ensure that the people are well-fed with God’s Word, receive proper guidance, and are protected from false teachings and destructive influences.

5. Freedom from Fear and Disarray: God’s promise in this verse includes the assurance that His people will no longer fear or be dismayed. The presence of good shepherds will bring security, peace, and stability. The shepherds’ faithful leadership will instil confidence and trust in the people, knowing that they are being led in the right direction.

6. Application: Jeremiah 23:4 encourages us to recognise God’s faithfulness in providing good shepherds in our lives. We should seek leaders who faithfully teach and uphold God’s Word, guiding us on the right path. Additionally, it reminds us of the ultimate Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, who provides for our spiritual needs, protects us, and brings us peace.
