Jeremiah 23:6
“In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.”
Context:Jeremiah 23 contains a message of judgment against the false prophets and leaders of Israel who had led the people astray. The chapter also includes a promise of the coming Messiah who would bring restoration and righteousness to the nation.
The Promised Deliverer:In this verse, Jeremiah prophesies about the future Messiah, who would bring salvation to Judah and safety to Israel. The verse highlights the hope of the people in the midst of a time of political turmoil and spiritual decline. It points forward to the coming of Jesus Christ, the ultimate Savior.
The Lord Our Righteousness:The name given to the Messiah in this verse is “THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.” This name reveals the nature and character of the Messiah. In Jesus Christ, God provided a way for humanity to be justified and made righteous before Him. Through His perfect life, sacrificial death, and resurrection, Jesus offers righteousness to all who believe in Him.
Salvation and Security:The verse emphasizes that in the days of the Messiah, both Judah and Israel would experience salvation and dwell safely. This speaks of a time of restoration, peace, and divine protection. It points to the spiritual redemption and security that believers find in Christ. Through faith in Jesus, we are saved from sin and eternal separation from God, and we can have the assurance of His abiding presence.
The Fulfillment in Jesus:Jeremiah’s prophecy finds its fulfillment in Jesus Christ. He is the long-awaited Messiah who came to reconcile humanity to God. Jesus’ sacrificial death on the cross and His resurrection provide the means for salvation and the assurance of righteousness for those who trust in Him. He offers eternal security and a restored relationship with God.
Application:
- Place your faith in Jesus:Recognize Jesus as the fulfillment of God’s promise and trust in Him as your Lord and Savior. Salvation and righteousness are found in Him alone.

- Embrace righteousness:Through Jesus, we are made righteous before God. Seek to live a life that reflects His righteousness, allowing the Holy Spirit to transform you from the inside out.
- Share the hope:Just as Jeremiah delivered a message of hope to the people of his time, we are called to share the good news of Jesus Christ with others. Point people to the salvation and security found in Him.
