Jeremiah 23:32

Posted on 18 May at 14:04

Behold, I am against them that prophecie false dreames, sayeth the Lord, and doe tell them, and cause my people to erre by their lyes and by their lightnesse, yet I sent them not, nor commanded them: therefore they shall not profite this people at all, sayth the Lord. Jeremiah 23:32 (KJV)

Jeremiah 23 delivers a stern prophecy against false prophets who were misleading Israel during a period of profound spiritual decline. The chapter opens with a rebuke of Israel’s leaders and shepherds for neglecting the people entrusted to them. In verse 21 God declares that He did not send these prophets, yet they claimed divine authority. Verse 32 specifically confronts the false dreams and lies that these impostors spread.

The verse begins with God’s declaration that He is against those who prophesy false dreams. These deceptive visions and messages were presented as divine revelation, but they were not from God. Their purpose was to lead the people astray rather than to bring them into the truth.

The false prophets caused Israel to err through their lies and “lightness.” Lightness here denotes a frivolous, superficial, and insubstantial approach to prophetic ministry. Instead of delivering God’s truth, they offered empty promises that undermined the spiritual well‑being of the nation and damaged its relationship with the Almighty.

God makes it unmistakably clear that He neither sent nor commanded these prophets. They operated under their own authority, claiming to speak for Him without His endorsement. This contrasts sharply with the true prophets whom God called and anointed to convey His faithful messages.

Consequently, the verse concludes that these false prophets will not profit the people at all. Their deceptive words bring no benefit; rather, they deepen the people’s distance from God and His truth.

For believers today, the passage underscores the need for discernment. Scripture urges us to test every spirit (1 John 4:1) and to examine teachings against the standard of God’s Word (Acts 17:11). We must seek the truth and be wary of those who distort or manipulate God’s message for personal gain or misguided agendas.

In conclusion, Jeremiah 23:32 highlights God’s opposition to false prophets and their misleading messages. It calls us to remain grounded in the Word, to exercise vigilant discernment, and to stay faithful to God’s truth, lest we be led astray by empty promises.
