1 Kings 3 recounts the early reign of King Solomon, son of David, in the land of Israel. Solomon made an alliance with Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, by marrying his daughter. As a sign of his commitment to the Lord, Solomon went to Gibeon to offer sacrifices. There, God appeared to Solomon in a dream and offered him anything he desired.
In his dream, Solomon humbly asked for wisdom and discernment to govern the people of Israel justly. Pleased with his request, God granted Solomon not only wisdom but also riches and honor, promising to bless him with a long and prosperous life if he remained obedient.
The chapter then moves to a famous story that demonstrates Solomon's wisdom. Two women came before him, both claiming to be the mother of the same baby. Solomon proposed cutting the child in half, intending to give each woman half of the child. However, the true mother, filled with compassion, pleaded with Solomon to spare the child and give him to the other woman. Solomon discerned the genuine mother's love and awarded her custody of the child, earning the admiration and respect of the people.
