1 Kings 3:27

Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof.

1 Kings 3:27 (KJV)

This verse is the climax of a story about two women who came to King Solomon. Both women lived in the same house and each had a baby. One woman accidentally smothered her own child during the night, then swapped her dead child with the other woman’s living baby. In the morning, each woman claimed the living child was hers. Solomon had earlier asked God for wisdom to govern His people, and God was pleased to grant it (1 Kings 3:5-15). Now the king faced a difficult case with no witnesses. His response in this verse reveals how God’s wisdom worked through him.

Solomon commanded, “Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof.” He had proposed to divide the child with a sword, giving half to each woman. The true mother, moved by deep compassion, begged that the child be given to the other woman rather than killed. The false mother agreed to the division. Solomon’s command shows that he understood the heart: the real mother would rather give up her claim than see her child harmed. Her willingness to surrender the child proved her genuine love.

The phrase “in no wise slay it” is strong and absolute. It shows that preserving life mattered more than settling the dispute by force. Solomon’s judgment was not a clever trick but a wise use of human emotion to reveal the truth. He recognised that true love prioritises the welfare of the beloved over personal possession. The true mother’s heart yearned for her son, while the other woman showed indifference to the child’s fate. This contrast made the decision clear.

This story points to the wisdom that God gives to those who ask. James 1:5 encourages believers to ask God for wisdom, and this account shows the practical result of such a request. The true mother’s sacrificial love also foreshadows the love of Christ, who as the Good Shepherd lays down His life for His sheep (John 10:14-15). Just as the mother gave up her claim to save her child, Christ gave Himself to save His people. The following verse, 1 Kings 3:28, records that all Israel feared the king because they saw the wisdom of God in him. This passage also reminds us that God knows the hearts of all people and will render true justice.

Seek God’s wisdom in daily decisions. Like Solomon, we can pray for discernment when facing complex situations. Trust that God hears and answers such prayers. Cultivate sacrificial love in relationships. The mother’s example teaches us to put the needs of others before our own desires, especially when protecting the vulnerable. Pursue justice with compassion. Fair decisions require understanding the truth and considering the hearts of those involved. Let love guide your judgments, not merely rules or appearances. Value every human life as precious, because God values life and calls us to protect it.

This verse calls us to examine our own hearts. Do we value the well-being of others more than our own rights? Are we willing to surrender what we cherish for the good of someone else? God sees the heart and judges righteously. He knows the true motives behind our words and actions. As we meditate on this account, we can thank God for His wisdom and ask Him to shape our love to be like that of the true mother and ultimately like Christ’s own sacrificial love.
