Jeremiah 42:16
Then it shall come to passe, that the sword which yee feared, shall ouertake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine whereof yee were afraid, shall follow close after you in Egypt, and there ye shall die. Jeremiah 42:16 (KJV)
In Jeremiah 42 a group of Judean refugees came to the prophet seeking the Lord’s direction concerning their future. They were terrified of the Babylonians and were contemplating flight to Egypt for safety. Recognizing Jeremiah as a true prophet, they asked him to pray and to discern God’s will on their behalf, showing that they understood the necessity of divine guidance before making a life‑changing decision.
God answered through Jeremiah with a stark warning. He declared that if the people chose to go to Egypt, the very calamities they dreaded—the sword and the famine—would overtake them there. The sword they feared would pursue them, and the famine they were afraid of would follow closely, ending in death in the foreign land. This warning was not a vague threat but a specific consequence tied to their disobedience of the earlier instruction to remain in Judah.
The passage underscores God’s sovereignty and omniscience. He knows the hearts and intentions of His people and foresees the outcome of their choices, even when those choices appear to promise safety. By revealing the inevitable result of seeking refuge in Egypt, God demonstrates that human wisdom and worldly security cannot replace reliance on His guidance.
Trusting in God’s direction, rather than in the perceived strength of a foreign nation, is the central lesson. The people’s temptation to place confidence in Egypt’s protection is met with a reminder of the futility of such trust when it runs contrary to God’s will. The inevitability of the consequences—sword and famine leading to death—highlights that disobedience to God’s clear command cannot be avoided.
For contemporary believers, this passage teaches the importance of seeking God’s counsel in every decision, especially those that affect our safety and future. Aligning ourselves with God’s will safeguards us, while reliance on worldly solutions can bring the very disasters we fear. Jeremiah 42:16 thus serves as a timeless reminder to trust in God’s wisdom and obey His guidance, even when alternative options seem more appealing.
