Mark Chapter 7

Summery

Mark 7 describes an encounter between Jesus and the religious leaders of his time who question his disciples’ failure to follow the traditions of ceremonial washing before eating. Jesus rebukes them, emphasizing that their strict adherence to external rituals without genuine inward transformation is meaningless. He highlights their hypocrisy, quoting the prophet Isaiah, and teaches that it is what comes from within a person that defiles them, not external factors.

Jesus then leaves the crowd and enters a house, where he explains to his disciples the true nature of defilement. He teaches that evil thoughts and actions originate from the heart, leading to sins such as adultery, theft, murder, and deceit. He emphasizes the importance of purity of heart and encourages his disciples to understand the significance of their words and actions.

A Syrophoenician woman approaches Jesus, seeking help for her demon-possessed daughter. Initially, Jesus implies that his mission is to the children of Israel, but the woman’s faith and persistence move him to heal her daughter, commending her for her great faith.

The chapter concludes with Jesus healing a deaf man with a speech impediment, demonstrating his power and authority over physical disabilities.
