And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.

Context

This verse belongs to the account of Jesus healing a man who was deaf and had a speech impediment. Jesus took the man aside from the crowd, put His fingers in the man’s ears, spat, and touched his tongue. Then, looking up to heaven, He sighed and spoke the Aramaic word “Ephphatha,” which Mark translates as “Be opened.“

Meaning

Jesus’ upward look was not a request for help, for He had power to heal by His own authority. Rather, it was a deliberate sign for the man and the onlookers, teaching them that the miracle came from God the Father. The sigh reveals Jesus’ deep compassion and His genuine sorrow over the brokenness that sin has brought into the world. He did not heal coldly or mechanically; He entered into the suffering of the man before Him.

The Aramaic word “Ephphatha” is preserved in the Gospel, showing the historical authenticity of the account. Jesus’ spoken command carried immediate power. The same verse that records His word also records its effect: the man’s ears were opened, his tongue was loosed, and he spoke plainly. The Creator’s word, which once brought the world into being, here restored what sin had marred.

Biblical connections

This healing points beyond physical restoration. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus confronts spiritual deafness and blindness, especially among those who should have recognized Him as the Messiah. The miracle illustrates Jesus’ power to open spiritual ears so that people can hear God’s Word and to loose tongues so that they can confess Him. It also foreshadows the restoration of all creation, when the effects of sin will be fully undone at Christ’s return.

Application

Jesus still opens what is closed. He can open ears that are dull to His voice and loosen tongues that are hesitant to speak of Him. This passage encourages believers to bring those who are spiritually deaf and mute to Jesus in prayer, trusting His compassion and His power. It also reminds us that true healing, whether physical or spiritual, comes from God alone and is motivated by His love.

Reflection

Consider what may be closed in your own life. Is there a reluctance to hear what God is saying, or a fear that silences your witness? The same Jesus who looked to heaven and said “Be opened” can open your ears and loose your tongue. His sigh assures us that He is not distant from our pain; He is moved by it. And His word still carries the power to transform.
