Jeremiah 42:19

The Lord hath said concerning you, O ye remnant of Iudah, Goe ye not into Egypt: know certainly, that I haue admonished you this day. Jeremiah 42:19 (KJV)

After the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians, the surviving remnant of Judah turned to the prophet Jeremiah for direction. They promised to obey whatever the Lord revealed through him and asked him to inquire of God on their behalf. Jeremiah sought the Lord, and the divine reply was unmistakable: the Lord commanded, “Go ye not into Egypt,” warning that if they set their faces on that course the sword they feared would overtake them, famine would follow, and they would die in Egypt. The people were terrified of the Babylonian threat and hoped Egypt would offer safety, yet the Lord had already declared that Egypt would not provide the protection they sought and that they were to remain in the land of Judah.

The admonition serves as a stark reminder that God’s guidance must be heeded above personal schemes. The remnant was called to trust the Lord’s plan rather than rely on their own solutions, recognizing that obedience to His word safeguards them from the very dangers they fear. This passage underscores the importance of seeking God’s direction in every decision, especially when circumstances are uncertain.

For contemporary believers the lesson is clear: obedience and trust in God’s will are essential, even when His direction runs counter to our immediate desires. God’s plans are perfect and His ways higher than ours; therefore, we are to place our confidence in His revealed counsel rather than in human judgment or the allure of seemingly safer alternatives.
