Jeremiah 42:20
“For ye dissembled in your hearts, when ye sent me unto the LORD your God, saying, Pray for us unto the LORD our God; and according unto all that the LORD our God shall say, so declare unto us, and we will do it.”
Historical Context:Jeremiah 42 is part of a section in the book of Jeremiah that describes the aftermath of the fall of Jerusalem to the Babylonians. A remnant of Judah, including military leaders and some people, approached Jeremiah, asking him to seek God’s guidance on their behalf. They had already determined to go to Egypt, seeking protection from the Babylonians, despite God’s explicit instructions for them to stay in the land of Judah. Their disobedience stemmed from a lack of trust in God’s promises and a desire to pursue their own agenda.
Lessons for Believers:This verse serves as a warning to believers about the dangers of hypocrisy and deceit. It highlights the importance of sincerity and genuine obedience when seeking God’s guidance. It reminds us that God sees the true intentions of our hearts, and our actions should align with our words. We must be honest with ourselves and with God, seeking His will with a willingness to obey, rather than approaching Him with ulterior motives or predetermined plans.
God’s Desire for Authenticity:God desires authenticity in our relationship with Him. He values honesty and integrity in our prayers and our commitment to follow His instructions. We should approach God with humble hearts, open to His leading and willing to align our lives with His will.
Consequences of Deception:The people of Judah faced severe consequences for their deception and disobedience. By going to Egypt, they not only defied God’s command but also sealed their fate. Egypt would prove to be a place of hardship and destruction for them, just as God had warned.
